General government surplus of 1.7% of GDP in 2022

Key Findings

  • Provisional data for 2022 shows a general government surplus of €8.5 billion which was 1.7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 

  • In 2022, revenue increased by €16.8 billion (16.9%) while expenditure rose by €1.7 billion (1.6%) resulting in an improvement of €15.1 billion on the 2021 deficit (See Table 1.2).  

  • The general government debt ratio decreased to 44.4% of GDP at year end 2022.

  • Gross debt fell by €11.4 billion during 2022 with an end-year position of €224.8 billion, compared with the 2021 figure of €236.1 billion (54.4% of GDP).

Changes to the data since publication in April 2023 reflect updated sources and changes in methodology.

The main Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP) notification tables for Ireland - details of government guarantees, Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) and concessions and tables showing the impact of government interventions in the financial sector - will be published on 23 October 2023, the same day as Eurostat's EDP statistics release.

Government accounts are compiled in the EU according to the European System of National Accounts 2010 (ESA2010) framework.
