Unadjusted goods exports were €16.7 billion in May 2023, a decrease of €1.2 billion compared with May last year.
Unadjusted goods imports were €11.6 billion, which was €1.6 billion less than imports in May 2022.
Seasonally adjusted goods exports were €15.8 billion in May 2023, a decline of over €400 million compared with April 2023.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports were €11.3 billion in May 2023.
Imports from Great Britain were €1.3 billion in May 2023, while exports to Great Britain were €1.6 billion.

Seasonally adjusted goods exports fell by €424 million (-3%) to €15,826 million in May 2023 compared with April 2023, according to preliminary figures.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports fell by €562 million (-5%) to €11,340 million leading to an increase of €138 million (+3%) in the seasonally adjusted trade surplus to €4,486 million in May 2023 compared with April 2023 (See Table 2). Seasonal adjustment compares month-to-month data by removing fluctuations that may occur due to seasonal patterns in trade.

The (unadjusted) value of goods exports fell by €1,212 million (-7%) to €16,702 million in May 2023 compared with May 2022. The value of goods exports for the period January to May 2023 was down by €4,813 million (-6%) to €82,509 million, when compared with the same period of 2022.
The (unadjusted) value of goods imports decreased by €1,622 million (-12%) to €11,649 million in May 2023 compared with May 2022. The value of goods imports for the first five months of 2023 increased by €2,789 million (+5%) to €57,776 million, when compared with the same period of 2022.
Exports to Great Britain were €1,647 million, which was 10% of total exports in May 2023. The products which accounted for the largest share of exports were Chemicals & Related Products at €700 million and Food & Live Animals with €339 million.
Imports from Great Britain in May 2023 were €1,324 million, which was 11% of the total value of imports. Imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials were valued at €298 million, and imports of Chemicals & Related Products accounted for €297 million (See Table 5).
The EU accounted for €6,942 million (42%) of total goods exports in May 2023, of which €1,818 million went to Germany, €1,450 million went to the Netherlands and €1,334 million went to Belgium.
The USA was the main non-EU destination accounting for €4,175 million (25%) of total exports in May 2023 (See Table 4).

Exports of Medical & Pharmaceutical Products decreased by €595 million (-8%) to €6,493 million in May 2023 compared with May 2022. This represented 39% of total exports.
Exports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus & Appliances fell by €453 million (-36%) to €795 million.
Exports of Professional, Scientific & Controlling Apparatus grew by €139 million (+19%) to €876 million.
Exports of Organic Chemicals decreased by €567 million (-19%) to €2,361 million in May 2023 compared with May 2022 (See Table 3).
Imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials decreased by €414 million (-41%) to €600 million.
Imports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus & Appliances fell by €365 million (-37%) to €613 million.
Imports of Machinery Specialised for Particular Industries fell by €239 million (-33%) to €480 million.
Imports of Medical & Pharmaceutical Products were up by €351 million (+36%) to €1,328 million (See Table 3).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (17 July 2023) released Goods Exports and Imports May 2023.
Commenting on the release, Ciarán Counihan, Statistician in the International Trade in Goods Division said: “In May 2023, Ireland’s unadjusted exports of goods decreased by €1.2 billion to €16.7 billion compared with May 2022. When seasonally adjusted, exports of goods fell by more than €400 million compared with April 2023.
The unadjusted imports for May 2023 were valued at €11.6 billion, down €1.6 billion on May 2022. Seasonally adjusted imports were €11.3 billion in May 2023.
Comparing the first five months of 2023 with the same period in 2022, exports of goods were down 6%, and the value of imports increased by 5%. Exports for the first five months of 2023 were more than €82 billion.
Imports from Great Britain fell by 34% to €1.3 billion in May 2023 compared with May 2022, and the largest decrease was in the imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials which fell by 53%.
Exports to Great Britain grew by 19% to €1.6 billion in May 2023 from May 2022.”
