Unadjusted goods exports were €14.8 billion in July 2022, an increase of more than €1.6 billion compared with July last year.
Unadjusted goods imports were €10.5 billion, which was €2.7 billion higher than imports in July 2021.
Seasonally adjusted goods exports were €15.7 billion in July 2022, a decrease of €859 million compared with June 2022.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports were €11.7 billion in July 2022, an increase of €52 million compared with June 2022.
Imports from Great Britain were nearly €1.9 billion in July 2022, while exports to Great Britain were €1.1 billion.
Seasonally adjusted goods exports decreased by €859 million (-5%) to €15,674 million in July 2022 compared with June 2022, according to preliminary figures.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports increased by €52 million (+0.4%) to €11,718 million leading to a decrease of €911 million (-19%) in the seasonally adjusted trade surplus to €3,956 million in July 2022 compared with June 2022 (see Table 2). Seasonal adjustment compares month-to-month data by removing fluctuations that may occur due to seasonal patterns in trade.
The (unadjusted) value of goods exports increased by €1,626 million (+12%) to €14,828 million in July 2022 compared with July 2021. The value of goods exports for the period January to July 2022 increased by €25,944 million (+28%) to €120,085 million, when compared with the same time period of 2021.
Exports of Medical & Pharmaceutical Products increased by €1,235 million (+27%) to €5,737 million in July 2022 compared with July 2021. This represented 39% of total exports.
Exports of Food & Live Animals increased by €196 million (+19%) to €1,251 million in July 2022 compared with July 2021.
Exports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus, Appliances & Parts increased by €371 million (+39%) to €1,316 million.
Exports of Organic Chemicals decreased by €291 million (-18%) to €1,371 million (see Table 3).
The (unadjusted) value of goods imports increased by €2,732 million (+35%) to €10,528 million in July 2022 compared with July 2021. The value of goods imports for the first seven months of 2022 increased by €20,199 million (+35%) to €77,199 million, when compared with the same time period of 2021.
Imports of Organic Chemicals increased by €1,163 million (+186%) to €1,788 million, representing 17% of total imports in July 2022.
Imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Products increased by €393 million (+76%) to €912 million in July 2022 compared with July 2021.
Imports of Machinery Specialised for Particular Industries increased by €224 million (+151%) to €373 million.
The value of goods imports for July 2022 excluding SITC 79 (Other Transport Equipment, Including Aircraft) increased by €3,025 million (+45%) to €9,766 million, compared with the corresponding July 2021 figure of €6,741 million (see Table 3).
Imports from Great Britain increased by €685 million (+58%) to €1,858 million compared with July 2021. The main increases were in the imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials and Chemicals & Related Products (see Table 5). Imports from Great Britain were 18% of the value of total imports in July 2022.
The value of goods imports from Great Britain for January to July 2022 increased by €5,454 million (+70%) to €13,289 million, compared with the same period in 2021.
Exports to Great Britain in July 2022 decreased by €351 million (-23%) to €1,148 million, compared with July 2021. The main changes were decreases in the exports of Chemicals & Related Products and Machinery & Transport Equipment. Exports to Great Britain accounted for 8% of total exports in July 2022.
The value of goods exports to Great Britain for the first seven months of 2022 increased by €1,887 million (+23%) to €10,030 million, compared with the same period of 2021.
Imports from Northern Ireland for January to July 2022 increased by €540 million (+24%) to €2,780 million when compared with the same time period of 2021.
Exports to Northern Ireland for January to July 2022 increased by €743 million (+36%) to €2,792 million when compared with the same time period in 2021 (see Table 5).

The EU accounted for €6,253 million (42%) of total goods exports in July 2022 of which €1,579 million went to Germany, €1,528 million went to Belgium and €1,235 million went to the Netherlands. Total EU exports in July 2022 increased by €1,726 million (+38%) compared with July 2021.
The USA was the main non-EU destination accounting for €3,675 million (25%) of total exports in July 2022.
The EU accounted for €3,108 million (30%) of total goods imports in July 2022, which is an increase of €316 million (+11%) compared with July 2021.
The UK with €2,280 million (22%), China with €1,606 million (15%) and the USA with €1,173 million (11%) were the main non-EU sources of imports (see Table 4).

Industrial Produce accounted for €13,621 million (92%) of total exports in July 2022. This is an increase of €1,386 million (+11%) when compared with July 2021. There was €5,703 million of this exported to the EU, €3,609 million to the USA and €1,194 million to the UK. Agricultural Produce accounted for €1,015 million (7%) of total exports (see Table 6).
Producer Capital Goods Ready for Use accounted for €1,669 million (16%) of total imports in July 2022, an increase of €65 million (+4%) when compared with July 2021.
Consumption Goods Ready for Use represented €2,388 million (23%) of total imports, and Materials for Further Production accounted for €6,253 million (59%) (see Table 7).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (15 September 2022) released Goods Exports and Imports July 2022.
Commenting on the release, Ciarán Counihan, Statistician in the International Trade in Goods Division said: “In July 2022, Ireland’s unadjusted exports of goods increased by €1.6 billion to €14.8 billion compared with July 2021. However, when seasonally adjusted, exports of goods fell by more than €800 million compared with June 2022.
The unadjusted imports for July 2022 were valued at €10.5 billion, an increase of more than €2.7 billion on July 2021.
Comparing the first seven months of 2022 with the same period in 2021, exports of goods increased by 28%, and the value of imports increased by 35%.
Imports from Great Britain grew by 58% to nearly €1.9 billion in July 2022 compared with July 2021, where the largest increases were in the imports of Mineral Fuels and Chemicals & Related Products.
Exports to Great Britain fell by 23% to below €1.2 billion in July 2022, due to a decrease in the exports of Chemicals & Related Products.”
