Unadjusted goods exports were €16 billion in August 2023, a decrease of €3.3 billion when compared with August last year.
Unadjusted goods imports were €9.8 billion, which was €2.7 billion less than imports in August 2022.
Seasonally adjusted goods exports were €16.5 billion in August 2023.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports were €10.5 billion in August 2023, down €1.3 billion compared with July 2023.
Exports to Great Britain were €1.3 billion in August 2023, while imports from Great Britain were €1.8 billion.

Seasonally adjusted goods exports fell by €72 million (-0.4%) to €16,517 million in August 2023 compared with July 2023, according to preliminary figures.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports fell by €1,311 million (-11%) to €10,571 million leading to an increase of €1,239 million (+26%) in the seasonally adjusted trade surplus to €5,946 million in August 2023 compared with July 2023 (See Table 2). Seasonal adjustment compares month-to-month data by removing fluctuations that may occur due to seasonal patterns in trade.

The (unadjusted) value of goods exports fell by €3,331 million (-17%) to €16,056 million in August 2023 compared with August 2022. The value of goods exports for the period January to August 2023 was down by €6,469 million (-5%) to €132,859 million, when compared with the same period of 2022.
The (unadjusted) value of goods imports decreased by €2,679 million (-21%) to €9,795 million in August 2023 compared with August 2022. The value of goods imports for the first eight months of 2023 decreased by €468 million (-1%) to €90,526 million, when compared with the same period of 2022.
Exports to Great Britain were €1,309 million, which was 8% of total exports in August 2023. The products which accounted for the largest share of exports were Chemicals & Related Products at €382 million, Food & Live Animals with €315 million, and Machinery & Transport Equipment with €240 million. Exports to Great Britain for January to August 2023 increased by €1,286 million (+11%) to €12,716 million when compared with the first eight months of 2022.
Imports from Great Britain in August 2023 were €1,830 million, which was 19% of the total value of imports. Imports of Chemicals & Related Products accounted for €672 million, imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials were valued at €285 million, and Machinery & Transport Equipment at €258 million. Imports from Great Britain in the first eight months of 2023 decreased by €460 million (-3%) to €14,962 million (See Table 5).
The EU accounted for €6,167 million (38%) of total goods exports in August 2023, of which €1,891 million went to Belgium, €1,218 million went to Germany and €1,318 million went to the Netherlands.
The USA was the main non-EU destination accounting for €5,059 million (32%) of total exports in August 2023 (See Table 4).

Exports of Organic Chemicals decreased by €3,328 million (-66%) to €1,677 million in August 2023 compared with August 2022.
Exports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus & Appliances fell by €660 million (-51%) to €625 million.
Exports of Medical & Pharmaceutical Products rose by €414 million (+6%) to €6,879 million (See Table 3). This represented 43% of total exports.
Imports of Organic Chemicals decreased by €659 million (-36%) to €1,168 million in August 2023 compared with August 2022. This represented 11% of total imports.
Imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials decreased by €668 million (-47%) to €749 million.
Imports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus & Appliances fell by €689 million (-50%) to €684 million. (See Table 3).
Imports of Office Machines & Automatic Data Processing Machines fell by €205 million (-37%) to €352 million. (See Table 3).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (16 October 2023) released Goods Exports and Imports August 2023.
Commenting on the release, Ciarán Counihan, Statistician in the International Trade in Goods Division said: “In August 2023, Ireland’s unadjusted exports of goods decreased by €3.3 billion to €16 billion when compared with August 2022. Seasonally adjusted exports were €16.5 billion in August 2023.
The unadjusted imports for August 2023 were valued at €9.8 billion, a fall of €2.7 billion on August 2022. When seasonally adjusted, imports of goods declined by €1.3 billion when compared with July 2023.
Comparing the first eight months of 2023 with the same period in 2022, exports of goods were down 5%, and the value of imports decreased by 1%. Exports for the first eight months of 2023 were €133 billion.
Imports from Great Britain fell by 14% to €1.8 billion in August 2023 when compared with August 2022, while the largest drop was in the imports of Mineral fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials which were down by 67%.
Exports to Great Britain fell by 15% to €1.3 billion in August 2023 when compared with August 2022, and the largest decrease of 42% was in the exports of Chemicals & Related Products.”
