Niamh Shanahan, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division of the CSO, noted that: "This is the first time the CSO has published figures on forestry scheme payments. The report shows that main afforestation programme payments in 2021 was €62 million. This was a 42% decrease from the highest figure of €108 million in 2010.
County Cork had the highest afforestation programme payments in every year. Cork accounted for 13.2% of the afforestation programme payments in 2021 followed by Kerry (8.2%), Clare (7.7%), and Roscommon (5.9%).
Payments for forest roads were highest in 2011 and declined from €4.2 million for 116 kilometres in 2011 to €2.9 million for 73 kilometres in 2021. Kerry accounted for 14% of forest road payments in 2021, followed by Cork (10%) and Kilkenny (10%). The forest roads kilometres in 2021 were 62% of the forest roads kilometres covered in 2011. "
