Excise clearances of Unleaded Petrol in October 2024, at 92 million litres, were 9% higher than the October 2023 figure of 84 million litres. This was the highest volume of Unleaded Petrol clearances recorded for the month of October since 2018 (See Table 1B).
Excise clearances of Autodiesel in October 2024, at 306 million litres, were 1% higher than the October 2023 figure of 301 million litres (See Table 1A).
Wholesale prices of Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol in October 2024 were lower than in October 2023 and October 2022 (See Tables 3A and 3B). These wholesale prices are based on the Wholesale Price Index series compiled to base 2021=100.
Excise clearances of Marked Gas Oil in October 2024, at 99 million litres, were 18% higher compared with the October 2023 figure of 84 million litres (See Table 1C).
Excise clearances of Kerosene in October 2024, at 110 million litres, were 20% higher compared with the October 2023 figure of 92 million litres (See Table 1D).
In the first 10 months of 2024, Kerosene excise clearances were 9% higher and Unleaded Petrol excise clearances increased by 6%, compared with the same period in 2023 (See Tables A, 1B, and 1D).
The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes and exceptional weather can cause variations in the trends of excise clearances of home heating oils between years. Changes in the vehicle fleet fuel type composition can affect the mix in clearances of road fuels. See the Background Notes for the full definition of fuel excise clearances.
There was a 9.3% increase in Kerosene excise clearances when comparing the year-to-date period January-October 2024 with January-October 2023. There was a 5.6% increase in Unleaded Petrol excise clearances when comparing the 12-month rolling period of November 2023-October 2024 with November 2022-October 2023 (See Tables A, 1B, and 1D).

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (05 December 2024) published Fuel Excise Clearances October 2024.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "Autodiesel clearances were 1.2% lower in the first 10 months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. They were 1.4% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of November 2023-October 2024 with November 2022-October 2023 (See Tables A and 1A). Clearances are the duty paid on the quantity of oil removed from bonded warehouses and provide a proxy for sales (See Editor’s Note below).
Excise clearances of Unleaded Petrol in October 2024, at 92 million litres, were 9% higher than the October 2023 figure of 84 million litres. This was the highest volume of Unleaded Petrol clearances recorded for the month of October since 2018 (See Table 1B).
Unleaded Petrol clearances were 5.7% higher in the first 10 months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. They were 5.6% higher when comparing the 12-month rolling period of November 2023-October 2024 with November 2022-October 2023 (See Tables A and 1B).
Excise clearances of Marked Gas Oil in October 2024 were 18% higher compared with October 2023 (See Table 1C). Marked Gas Oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.
Excise clearances of Kerosene in October 2024 were 20% higher compared with October 2023 (See Table 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.
The monthly mean air temperature at Dublin Airport in October 2024 was 11.3 degrees Celsius, the same as in October 2023 (See Figure 4 and Table 4).”
