Autodiesel clearance volumes in February 2025 were 4% lower than February 2024

Online ISSN: 2737-7202
CSO statistical release, , 11am

Key Findings

  • Excise clearances of Autodiesel in February 2025, at 271 million litres, were 4% lower than the February 2024 figure of 281 million litres. Autodiesel clearances were 6% lower in the first two months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024 (See Tables A and 1A).

  • Excise clearances of Unleaded Petrol in February 2025, at 81 million litres, were 3% higher than the February 2024 figure of 79 million litres. This was the highest volume of Unleaded Petrol clearances recorded for the month of February since 2018 (See Table 1B).

  • Wholesale prices of Autodiesel in February 2025 were slightly lower than February 2024, while wholesale prices of Unleaded Petrol in February 2025 were higher than February 2024 (See Tables 3A and 3B). This Wholesale Price Index series is compiled to base 2021=100.

  • Excise clearances of Marked Gas Oil in February 2025, at 88 million litres, was 10% higher compared with the February 2024 figure of 80 million (See Table 1C).

  • Excise clearances of Kerosene in February 2025, at 103 million litres, was 8% higher compared with the February 2024 figure of 95 million litres (See Table 1D).

  • In the first two months of 2025, Autodiesel and Kerosene excise clearances both decreased by 6%, compared with the same period in 2024 (See Tables A, 1A, and 1D).

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (24 April 2025) published Fuel Excise Clearances February 2025.

Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "Autodiesel clearances were 6% lower in the first two months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. They were 3% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of March 2024-February 2025 with March 2023-February 2024 (See Tables A and 1A). Clearances are the duty paid on the quantity of oil removed from bonded warehouses and provide a proxy for sales (See Editor’s Note below).

Excise clearances of Unleaded Petrol in February 2025, at 81 million litres, were 3% higher than the February 2024 figure of 79 million litres. This was the highest volume of Unleaded Petrol clearances recorded for the month of February since 2018 (See Table 1B).

Unleaded Petrol clearances were 1% higher in the first two months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. They were 4% higher when comparing the 12-month rolling period of March 2024-February 2025 with March 2023-February 2024 (See Tables A and 1B).

Marked Gas Oil clearances were 2% higher in the first two months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024 (See Tables A and 1C). Marked Gas Oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.

Kerosene clearances were 6% lower in the first two months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024 (See Tables A and 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.

Editor's Note

The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes and exceptional weather can cause variations in the trends of excise clearances of home heating oils between years. Changes in the vehicle fleet fuel type composition can affect the mix in clearances of road fuels. See the Background Notes for the full definition of fuel excise clearances.

Excise Clearances Percentage Changes for Selected Fuels February 2025

There was a 6.3% decrease in Autodiesel excise clearances when comparing the year-to-date period January-February 2025 with January-February 2024. There was a 4.5% rise in Unleaded Petrol excise clearances when comparing the 12-month rolling period of March 2024-February 2025 with March 2023-February 2024 (See Tables A, 1A, and 1B).
