Global population increased by 207% from 2.5 billion to 7.8 billion between 1950 and 2020.

Africa‘s share of the World’s population increased from 9% in 1950 to 17% in 2020, while Europe’s fell from 22% to 10% over the same period. In 2020, Asia was the World region with the largest share of the World’s population at 60%.

1.2 World: Child mortality rates 1950-2020

Global child mortality rates, as measured by the number of deaths of children before the age of five per 1,000 live births, have fallen from an average annual 213 in 1950-1955 to 40 in 2015-2020.

The greatest relative fall in child mortality rates occurred in Europe where the average annual rate declined from 93 to 5 between 1950-1955 and 2015-2020. Europe also had the lowest average annual child mortality rate in the world in 2015-2020 at 5 deaths before the age of five per 1,000 live births.

Africa had the highest child mortality rate in the World in 2015-2020, with an average annual 71 deaths of children before age five per 1,000 live births, despite having the largest absolute fall over the 1950-2020 period.

Global life expectancy at birth increased from an average annual 47.0 years in 1950-1955 to 72.3 years in 2015-2020.

Although life expectancy in Africa increased from an average annual 37.5 years in 1950-1955 to 62.7 years in 2015-2020, the latter figure was still the lowest for any world region. In contrast North America had the highest life expectancy at birth in 2015-2020 at 79.2 years.

1.4 World: Greenhouse gas emissions 1990-2019

This indicator shows greenhouse gas emissions for selected countries and regions specified in Annex 1 of the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change between 1990 and 2019.

EU emissions of greenhouse gases fell by 28% from 5.7 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 1990 to 4.1 billion tonnes in 2019. Russian Federation emissions fell by 33% from 3.2 billion tonnes in 1990 to 2.1 billion tonnes in 2019. Emissions from the USA were 6.6 billion tonnes in 2019 up 2% from 6.4 billion tonnes in 1990.

In contrast, emissions from Turkey grew by 131% from 220 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 1990 to 506 million tonnes in 2019.
