Total median annual earnings were highest in the Information and communication sector at €56,506 in 2018 with median earnings for males in the sector at €61,846 and females at €46,700. The public sector had total median annual earnings of €47,116 while the private sector median was 32.8% lower at €31,684. The lowest median annual earnings were in the Accommodation and food services sector at €19,949 where males had a median of €22,592 and females a median of €17,932.
Total mean annual earnings were also highest in the Information and communication sector in 2018 at €70,264 an increase of 4.1% on 2017's figure of €67,513 and an increase of 19.7% in the 5 years from 2013 when it stood at €58,703. The lowest 5-year increase in mean annual earnings was in the education sector which saw an increase of 1.1% between 2013 and 2018 from €48,995 to €49,534. Employees who worked for less than 50 weeks in the reference year are excluded from the calculations for annual earnings. This is done to improve comparability of the data over time.
