When it comes to employment, census results show there were 2.3 million people in work in April 2022, up 16% since the previous census in 2016.
Interestingly, the number of retired people grew by 21% to 658,000 people, which was a higher rate of increase than the growth in numbers at work.
It is worth noting that there has been a significant fall of 34% in those unemployed since 2016 to 176,000 people.
A new question in Census 2022 provided detailed information on people working from home. In April 2022, one in three people were working from home at least one day a week, or about 750,000 workers. Of these, 32% worked at home for one or two days while 33% were at home for five or more days per week.
Workers in Dún Laoighre-Rathdown were the most likely to work from home with 57% doing so at least one day a week while just 21% of workers in Monaghan and Longford worked from home.
The car remains the most popular means of travelling to work with 1.3 million workers, or about 63% of commuters travelling by car at the time of the census in April 2022.
Walking was the next most popular mode of transport at 9%, followed by 6% of people using the bus. A smaller percentage of people cycled to work at just 3%, with a further 3% using the train.
