Long-Lasting Conditions and Difficulties

More than 1.1 million people or 22% of the population experienced at least one long-lasting condition or difficulty, Census 2022 results show.

Changes to the questions on this subject give us greater insight on the extent to which people experienced these conditions and difficulties and we found that over 400,000 people experienced them to a great extent or by a lot, and over 700,000 people did so to some extent or by a little.

General Health and Smoking Tobacco Products

The percentage of people who reported their general health status as either very good or good was 83% in Census 2022, down from 87% recorded in 2016. In fact, all counties reported a shift from good to less good health in the 11 years between Census 2011 and 2022.

Looking at the data from our new question on smoking, we can see that almost 80% of the population reported they had either never smoked or had given up smoking, while 13% smoked either daily or occasionally.

Carers

Between 2016 and 2022, the number of people providing regular unpaid care and the number of hours of care provided each week all rose. The number of unpaid carers was up by 53% to almost 300,000 in Census 2022, while nearly 30% of carers provided care for more than 43 hours per week. We can also see that six in ten people providing unpaid care were female.
