Measuring the Impact of COVID-19 2020-2022

The Central Statistics Office (CSO), as Ireland's national statistical institute, has been providing independent and verifiable statistics about our society, economy, and environment for more than 75 years.  This information is freely available to everyone on our website and supports evidence-informed decision making.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact life in Ireland and despite considerable challenges, the CSO not only continued to produce key statistical releases which measured the impact of the virus on our economy, we also developed a new series of Social Surveys to provide timely information on the impact of the pandemic on our personal lives.

The CSO created a number of innovative bulletins and insight series, some using new data sources and data collection techniques, to capture the evolving impact of the pandemic on our labour market, transport patterns, and our health in terms of COVID-19 cases and related deaths. We also produced a set of releases which tried to measure the impact of the virus on our lives at key milestones to provide an overview of its far-reaching effects.

Many of these releases and insights would not have been possible without the thousands of people and enterprise owners who completed our surveys during this challenging time. The CSO is very conscious that behind every statistic is the lived experience of real person or enterprise. We want to thank everyone for their continued support of the work of the CSO.
