Just like every business and organisation in the country, the work of the Central Statistics Office (CSO) was significantly changed by the pandemic.
In March 2020, in line with Government guidelines, the vast majority of CSO employees moved from office-based work to almost wholly working from home. Our team of interviewers who conduct thousands of vital surveys household surveys each year could no longer do so face-to-face, and instead had to rely on letters and the telephone. It also meant the postponement of our Census from April 2021 to April 2022, and our Census of Agriculture.
The CSO responded to the pandemic by not only continuing to produce key releases, but created new statistical outputs using new data sources and new data collection techniques. These new approaches to statistical production were important in providing key information to decision makers, as well as meeting the public's need for reliable, timely, and accurate data.
To explore the full range of CSO releases measuring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland, please refer to the release archive where statistical releases relating to COVID-19 between 2020-2022 were collected and organised by theme. We have also collected some snapshots and review releases in a separate section which provide an overview of the impact at milestone intervals.
