Animal Housing and Manure Management

The results presented below were gathered during data collection as part of the Animal Housing and Manure Management survey. This was a sample survey that represented farms with livestock that were above at least one of the physical farm holding thresholds as described in Annex 2 of the integrated farm statistics Regulation (EU) No. 2018/1091. See background notes for more details.

The most reported way to store manure in 2020 was covered liquid manure / slurry storage facilities.

Over 60% of farm holdings in the South-East (60.8%), South-West (63.5%), Midland (66.3%) and Mid-West (70.8%) regions had covered storage facilities for liquid manure / slurry in 2020.

The remaining three regions had 60% or less, as Border, West and Mid-East and Dublin regions reported 60%, 57.7% and 52.1% respectively in 2020.

The second most reported way to store manure in 2020 was the storage of solid manure in heaps.

The lowest proportion of farm holdings that stored solid manure in heaps in 2020 were in the Border (34.3%) and West (40.2%) regions.

South-West and Mid-West regions had the same proportion (45.2%) of farm holdings that stored solids manure in heaps in the 2020.

Over 50% of farm holdings in the Midlands (54.1%), Mid-East and Dublin (55.6%), and South-East (63.8%) stored solid manure in heaps.

The South-West, Mid-West and South-East combined have 71.6% of the housing for dairy cows in 2020.

54.3% of the housing had solid flooring in the Mid-West region, 46.6% of the housing had solid flooring in the Sout-East region and 43.5% of the housing had solid flooring in the South-West region.

In the Midlands and Mid-East and Dublin regions, there was fewer places for dairy cows reported, however similar distribution of slatted and solid flooring was observed in 2020, 55.0% solid flooring in the Midlands region and 43.5% in the Mid-East and Dublin region.

Over three quarters of the housing in the Border (80.0%) and West (76.2%) regions consisted of solid flooring.

Housing places for all cattle other than dairy cows were approximately evenly distributed proportionally accross the seven regions in 2020. The Mid-West region contributed the most, with 18.7% of places, and the Mid-East and Dubln region contributed the least, with 10.3% of places. 

Within each region there more solid flooring places than slatted flooring places.

Over 70% of the places had solid flooring in 2020 in the Border (76.3%), West (74.0%)  and Mid-West (71.6%) regions.  

Three regions had between 60% and 70% of solid flooring for the housing for other cattle in 2020. These were the South-East (61.9%), the South-West (68.1%) and the Midland (66.0%) regions.

The Mid-East and Dublin region was the only region with close to a 50% split between solid and slattted flooring in the houing. 51.7% of the housing in this region was solid flooring in 2020.

The Midlands, South-West and Border regions combined held 75.0% of housing for breeding sows in 2020.

Each of the three regions had solid flooring greater than 80% of its' housing. Within the Border region, 89.8% of the housing had solid flooring, the corresponding proportion for the South-West region was 88.1% and 81.9% for the Midland region in 2020.

Although it had the fewest places for breeding sows, the West region had a similar solid flooring, slatted flooring breakdown with 84.5% of the housing places having solid flooring.

The Mid-West region had the next highest proportion of solid flooring for breeding sows places at 75.1%, followed by the Mid-East and Dublin (68.9%) and South-East (59.4%).

The Midlands, Border, South-West and South-East regions combined to hold 86.6% of the housing for Other Pigs in 2020.

Each of the four regions had solid flooring greater than 84% of its' housing. Within the Border region, 92.1% of the housing had solid flooring, the corresponding proportion for the South-East region was 95.2%, 84.2% in the South-West region and 97.5% in the Midlands region in 2020.

Although they had fewer places for Other Pigs, the West and Mid-West regions had a similar solid flooring / slatted flooring breakdown with 99.9% of the housing places having solid flooring in the West and 80.9% in Mid-West regions.

The Mid-East and Dublin had the smallest proporiton (68.1%) of housing with solid floor for Other Pigs in 2020.
