GVA at current market price (GDP) from 2013 to 2021 at NUTS 2 level is shown in Figure 4.1. Details of the NUTS 2 classification can be viewed in Table 5.1 (see Background Notes). Current Market Price refers to the amount of money actually paid by the end user. It includes Product Taxes (e.g., VAT), Non-Product Taxes on Production (such as local authority Rates) and excludes Product Subsidies (such as for public transport) and Non-Product subsidies (such as farm modernisation Subsidies) received by the producer.
A further increase in GDP for the Eastern and Midland region in 2021 is observed in Figure 4.1, continuing the trend of strong year-on-year growth from 2013 onwards. GDP for the Eastern and Midlands region stands at €238.4 billion for 2021, representing a 12.6% increase from 2020. The Southern region has reported GDP amounting to €163.0 billion for 2021. GDP in the Northern and Western region has also increased to €32.7 billion for 2021, a 10.4% increase from 2020. Despite a significant increase, however, the Northern & Western region still significantly lags behind the rest of the county.
Index of GVA per person at basic price at NUTS3 level where the state average equals 100 is shown in Map 4.1. The monetary values of GVA at basic price are shown in Table 4.1. Supporting what is observed in Figure 4.1, the largest GVA per capita values are seen in the South-West with an index of 184.2 and GVA of €150,267 per person, followed by Dublin with an index of 162.2 and GVA of €132,259 per person. While the Eastern region has a substantially larger total GVA than the Southern region, on a per capita basis the South-West leads Dublin. This is attributed to a denominator effect, whereby GVA in the Southern region is being distributed over a smaller population when compared with the Eastern region, which includes Dublin City and County.
GVA per capita follows a similar trend as disposable income per capita. Areas of high GVA are concentrated around Dublin, the East Coast and the South-West while areas of lower GVA per person are in the West (index: 53.4 and GVA: €43,541 per person), Midlands (index: 30.2 and GVA: €24,661 per person) and the Border region (index: 29.7 and GVA: €24,228 per person). The areas of lowest GVA are also the areas that lack economic sectors like Industry and Information and Communication, and are largely reliant on Public Administration to generate value and employment in the region.
