The cost of energy purchases by enterprises in 2019 was €8.2 billion of which 67% was paid for by firms in the Services sector (see Table 1B).
Purchases of electricity and natural gas accounted for 48% of total energy costs incurred by enterprises in 2019 (see Table 2C and Figure 1).
The proportion of total energy (in terms of kilotonnes of oil equivalent) purchased by the Services sector increased from 41% in 2010 to 52% in 2019 (see Table 1A).
The use of renewable energy (in ktoe) that was purchased directly by enterprises increased by 40% between 2010 and 2019 (see Table 2A).
There was a substantial decrease in the use of coal and peat by enterprises in 2019 (mainly used to produce electricity).
The quantity of electricity from wind turbines generated and consumed onsite in the Industry and Services sectors increased by 45% between 2018 and 2019.
Enterprises with their headquarters based in Dublin used 71% of total energy consumption by enterprises in 2019 (see Table 7A).
This release is based on the energy purchase costs of Industry and Services enterprises resident in Ireland. Energy purchased abroad by enterprises resident in Ireland is included e.g. fuel purchased by an Irish resident airline in other countries. Energy purchased in Ireland by foreign resident enterprises is not included e.g. purchases of autodiesel by a foreign registered vehicle. See Background Notes for more information.

Statistician's Comment
Commenting on the release Dympna Corry, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "The cost of purchases of electricity and natural gas amounted to 48% of the total cost of energy purchases by enterprises in the Industry and Services sectors in 2019. In terms of the quantity of energy consumed (in kilotonnes of oil equivalent), the share accounted for by the Services sector increased from 41% in 2010 to 52% in 2019. Wood biomass (woodpellet, woodchip, woodlog and woodwaste) comprised 57% of the quantity of renewable energy purchased directly by enterprises in 2019 (this excludes purchases of metered electricity that was generated from renewable sources). The total quantity of renewable energy purchased by enterprises in the Industry and Services sectors was 40% higher in 2019 compared with 2010.
Coal decreased by 63% from 1.1 million tonnes in 2018 to 394,000 tonnes in 2019. Peat decreased by 14% from 2.6 million tonnes in 2018 to 2.2 million tonnes in 2019. Coal and peat were predominantly used in the Energy sector to generate electricity. The quantity of electricity from wind turbines generated and consumed onsite in the Industry and Services sectors increased by 45% between 2018 and 2019.
The share of energy, in terms of ktoe, accounted for by enterprises in the Emissions Trading Scheme decreased from 50% in 2010 to 40% in 2019."
