The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (11 March 2022) published its latest Transport Bulletin. This bulletin captures changing traffic volumes and the number of journeys taken on public transport as a result of the pandemic and as we move out of restrictions. This bulletin is compiled using data collected by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Transport.

The bulletin shows that at the end of February car traffic volumes and public transport journeys remain below pre-COVID-19 levels.

Commenting on this latest bulletin, Nele van der Wielen, Statistician, said: “In line with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, traffic volumes increased during February 2022. Car traffic volumes in Dublin increased by 27% between the first week of January and the last week of February, but still remained below pre-COVID-19 levels.

The number of journeys on public transport at the end of February also remained below pre-COVID-19 levels. Public transport journeys in the week starting 20 February 2022 were 65% of the number in early March 2020, (before COVID-19).”

Further commenting on the Transport Bulletin, Nele van der Wielen said: “Today’s publication also shows that there were 13,643 new private cars and 3,929 used (imported) private cars licensed in February 2022. Compared to February 2021, this was a fall of 41% for used private cars and an increase of 17% for new private cars.”

This bulletin will be updated on a regular basis to measure the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on transport. Future editions will be located on the CSO COVID-19 Information Hub.
