Agricultural Price Indices January 2022

Fertiliser prices have more than doubled and are up 127% in the year from January 2021 to January 2022
  • Monthly agricultural input price index up 5.5% from December 2021 to January 2022
  • Monthly agricultural output down 0.1% in same period
  • Milk prices up 29.7% in January 2022 compared with January 2021
  • Energy prices up over 30% in the year to January 2022
  • Feed prices up nearly 20% in the same period

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (15 March 2022) released Agricultural Price Indices December and Year 2021.

Commenting on the release, Anthony Dawson, Statistician, said: “Today’s release details price indices for January 2022. The most significant change is in the price of fertilisers where the price index is up 127.2% on prices in January 2021.

More generally, the monthly input price index is up 5.5% on December 2021 prices while the monthly output price index is down 0.1% in the same period. This means the resulting agricultural terms of trade index has decreased by 5.3% since December.

Milk prices are up 29.7% on January 2021 prices while energy and feed prices are up 31.9% and 18.2% in the same period respectively.”

The agricultural output price indices are intended to measure trends in the price of agricultural produce sold by farmers. The agricultural input price indices are designed to measure trends in the prices paid by farmers for purchases of goods and service.

The agricultural terms of trade index is the output price index expressed as a percentage of the input price index.
