Go to release: Vehicles licensed for the first time March 2021
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (09 April 2021) published Vehicle Licensing figures for March 2021. These figures are based on the National Vehicle and Driver File compiled by the Department of Transport.
Today’s publication shows that the number of new cars licensed for the first time in March 2021 was 10,672 compared with 10,239 in March 2020, an increase of 4.2% or 433 more cars.
Commenting on the data, Noreen Dorgan, Assistant Principal, said: “Today’s figures from the CSO show the continued growth in the number of electric and hybrid vehicles licensed in Ireland. Despite the drop of 11.0% in the overall number of new cars licensed in the first three months of 2021, the number of new hybrid and electric cars licensed in that period accounted for 32.2% of all new cars licensed. The number of new electric cars licensed from January to March 2021 grew by 54.8% from 1,495 to 2,314. New Plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) cars licensed more than doubled (+142.0%) in the first three months of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020 (2,292 compared to 947).”
Further commenting on the results, Noreen Dorgan, said: “The number of used cars licensed in the first three months of 2021 rose by 5.1% (1,043 vehicles) compared with the same period in 2020. Furthermore, the number of used (imported) diesel private cars licensed fell by 6.9% from 13,746 in the first three months of 2020 to 12,802 in the same period of 2021.”
