There was an annual increase in employment of 3.2% or 58,000 in the year to the third quarter of 2013, bringing total employment to 1,899,300.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment increased by 22,500 (+1.2%) in the quarter. This follows on from a seasonally adjusted increase in employment of 13,500 (+0.7%) in Q2 2013.
Unemployment decreased by 41,700 (-12.8%) in the year to Q3 2013 bringing the total number of persons unemployed to 282,900.
The long-term unemployment rate decreased from 8.9% to 7.6% over the year to Q3 2013. Long-term unemployment accounted for 58.4% of total unemployment in Q3 2013 compared with 59.5% a year earlier and 58.4% in the third quarter of 2011.
The total number of persons in the labour force in the third quarter of 2013 was 2,182,100, representing an increase of 16,300 (+0.8%) over the year. The number of persons not in the labour force in Q3 2013 was 1,410,700, a decrease of 19,000 (-1.3%) over the year.
