Close to 88% of Distribution and Services enterprises have less than 10 persons engaged

The CSO has released today the results of Annual Services Inquiry 2009, the detailed survey of Distribution and Services sectors of the economy.

Main results

• Gross turnover of Distribution enterprises in 2009 was just over €99,900m and gross value added €14,979m. A total of 339,216 persons were engaged and €8,867m was paid in wages and salaries during the year.

• Gross turnover of Services enterprises in 2009 was just over €87,974m and gross value added €30,859m. A total of 579,331 persons were engaged and €16,392m was paid in wages and salaries during the year.

Other results

• Stocks held by enterprises in the Distribution sector decreased by over €1,817m, including a drop of €1,070m in stocks held by Motor Trades. This was the second consecutive year of decline in stocks.
• The share of the total number of Distribution and Services enterprises with less than 10 persons engaged increased slightly from 86.3% to 87.9% in comparison to 2008, as did the share of employment, from 26.8% to 28.9%. The share of turnover remained unchanged at close to 15.5%.
• 29.6% of persons engaged in Distribution and Services enterprises were working part-time. This ratio varies widely depending on the enterprise type of activity, from a low of 7.9% in Information and Communication to highs of 46.8% and of 45.3% in the Retail and Hospitality sectors respectively.
