Over twice as many births as deaths in 2005

The number of births registered in 2005 (61,042) was over twice the number of deaths registered (27,441). This is the 4th year in a row in which this has been the case. The resultant natural increase in population (difference between births and deaths) was 33,601.

These figures are contained in the Central Statistics Office’s Vital Statistics, Fourth Quarter and Yearly Summary report 2005.

The number of births was 642 less than the 2004 figure. Birth rates for women over 35 continued to rise while birth rates for women under 35 fell. There were 13,208 babies born to mothers aged 35 to 39 in 2005, 664 more than in 2004. By contrast, there were 2,427 babies born to teenage mothers in 2005, 133 less than in 2004. The average age of mothers having their first baby was 28.7 years, 0.2 years older than in 2004. The average age of all mothers was 31.0 years, 0.2 years older than in 2004.

Just over two in five (40.5%) births in 2005 were to first time mothers. Nearly one-third (32%) of births in 2005 were outside marriage.

The number of deaths registered was 710 less than the 2004 figure. This works out as an annual rate of 6.6 deaths per 1,000 population, 0.4 less than in 2004 and 2.1 less than in 1996. For those aged 65 and over, the rate was 46.7 deaths per 1,000 population, meaning that less than 1 in 21 people aged 65 and over died in 2005. This compares with 49 deaths per 1,000 population for those aged 65 and over in 2004, and 61 deaths per 1,000 population for those aged 65 and over in 1996.

Almost 4 in every 5 deaths were from either diseases of the circulatory system (36%), cancer (28%), or diseases of the respiratory system (14%). The number of deaths due to circulatory diseases (which include heart disease and stroke) fell by 624 to 9,984. The number of deaths due to respiratory diseases also fell to 3,955, 105 less than in 2004. The number of deaths due to cancer fell by 103 to 7,614.

There were 431 suicides registered or 10.4 per 100,000 population. Males represented 82% of suicides, while females represented 18%.

There were 20,723 marriages registered in 2005, 104 more than in 2004. The number of divorces granted by the Circuit Court and the High Court was 3,433.
