The Department of Health / CSO Health Data Liaison Group will play an important role in assessing the needs of key users of health data and developing the statistical potential of data sources in this field. It will also facilitate the effective exchange of information on all areas of health data between the main producers and users of such data.
The role of the Group shall be to:
1. Function as a discussion forum to advise on the health data required to support national and regional policy needs;
2. Discuss the statistical potential of data sources and opportunities for data sharing;
3. Discuss matters arising from the development of a national health sector data strategy;
4. Discuss matters that affect Ireland’s health information system;
5. Address any data matters arising related to existing data transfers between the health bodies and the CSO as established under memorandums of understanding or data sharing agreements;
6. Be informed of health information developments internationally;
7. Confidentiality of data being respected at all times.

The CSO will be responsible for organising meetings but meetings will be co-chaired by Muiris O’Connor (Assistant Secretary General, DoH) and Paul Morrin (Assistant Director General, CSO). The Liaison Group shall be made up of representatives of the CSO, the Department of Health and other bodies responsible for the collection and maintenance of the main datasets in the Health sector. Agenda items for discussion can be proposed at a meeting for discussion at the next meeting or proposed in writing to the coordinator of the group. Statisticians will be invited to attend meetings that involve their area of expertise / interest.
The Liaison Group shall meet on at least two occasions each year by all organisations in the group to identify possible new areas of cooperation.
