Overview

The Graduate Programme at the Central Statistics Office (CSO) is an opportunity for recent graduates to kickstart their careers in the field of statistics and data analysis, and inform public policy. Designed to cultivate the next generation of data specialists, this programme provides a comprehensive introduction to the workings of the CSO and its crucial role in national and European statistics. 

The graduate programme offers a fixed term contract for approximately 9 months whereby a graduate will be assigned to a specific project. The graduate programme is structured to allow a combination of project work and a structured training curriculum focusing on the core competencies needed in the field of statistics. There is ample opportunity to enhance your skills with access to online learning modules and platforms depending on individual needs.

Responsibilities

Participants in the Graduate Programme will gain valuable hands-on experience, professional development, and the chance to work with experts in the field. Graduates will not only enhance their skills and career prospects but also contribute to the mission of the CSO in providing accurate and timely statistics that inform government policy and support societal needs.

The role involves a wide range of functions, and the candidate must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Ability to work effectively on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Strong focus on meeting the needs of customers.
  • Strong communication, report writing and presentation skills.
  • Capability in building and maintaining good working relationships with a wide range of people.
  • Strong analytical skills to collect, organise and disseminate information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to progress multiple work activities successfully under the pressure of competing deadlines.
  • Thinking creatively and critically about how to improve and add value to existing processes and outputs and following through to implementation.

Locations and Opportunities

The programme accommodates several entry streams which vary each year allowing candidates to select the area that aligns with their qualifications and career aspirations.

These streams may include:

  • Statistics/Economics/Data Analysis
  • Information Technology
  • Digital Communications
  • Placements in other corporate areas are available on occasion (such as HR, Marketing etc) 

Successful candidates will be assigned to Cork or Dublin (Rathmines and Swords) with opportunities for blended working where possible. There may also be opportunities to work in various Government Departments/Agencies in line with the National Statistical Service.
