Production of the three main cereals (wheat, oats and barley) increased by 275,000 tonnes to 2,401,000 tonnes in 2013. The production of spring cereals (wheat, oats and barley) increased by 482,000 tonnes (+43.3%) to 1,593,000 tonnes, including an increase of 380,000 tonnes (+40.4%) in spring barley. See Tables 1- 3.

The yield of potatoes increased by 48.1% from 25.8 tonnes per hectare in 2012 to 38.2 tonnes per hectares in 2013, resulting in an increase in production of 178,000 tonnes (+76.8%).

Further comparisons with the 2012 results indicate that:

  • Winter wheat production decreased by 204,000 tonnes (-32.5%). This was due to a drop of 39,200 hectares (-46.3%) in the area sown.
  • Winter oats production decreased by 25,000 tonnes (-36.2%). The area sown decreased by 4,500 hectares (-45.7%), while the yield increased by 17.4%.
  • Oilseed rape production fell by 10,000 tonnes (-16.2%). The area sown decreased by 3,800 hectares (-21.7%), while the yield increased by 12.4%.

Background Notes

Introduction

This release presents final estimates of the area, yield and production of the main arable crops in 2013 together with the comparable estimates for 2011 and 2012. The June 2011 – June 2013 estimates for the area under crops shown in Table 1 have been obtained from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) Single Payment Scheme.

The yield estimates are obtained from a joint survey conducted by Teagasc and the CSO.

Methodology

The yield figures are given on a “green” (as harvested) basis. The winter wheat yield refers to feed wheat. Similarly, the spring barley yield refers to feed barley. The oilseed rape yield is a weighted average of the winter and spring yield.

For potatoes, the early crop yield was applied to a proportion of the area under potatoes based on an estimate of the area sown under early potato varieties in each county. The main crop yield was applied to the remaining area.

The State yield figure is generally calculated by multiplying the area figure by the average yield figure at a county level and then aggregating to the State level. The State production figure is then calculated by multiplying the State area, as per the Single Payment areas from DAFM, by the State yield figure.
