Production of the three main cereals (wheat, oats and barley) increased by 197,000 tonnes to 2,598,000 tonnes in 2014. The production of winter cereals (wheat, oats and barley) increased by 502,000 tonnes (+62.2%) to 1,310,000 tonnes, including an increase of 241,000 tonnes (+57.2%) in winter wheat. See Table 3.

The yield of potatoes increased by 6.0% from 38.2 tonnes per hectare in 2013 to to 40.5 tonnes per hectare in 2014. The area sown decreased by 11.9% to 9,500 hectares, which resulted in a decrease in production of 27,000 tonnes (-6.6%). See Tables 1- 3.

Further comparisons with the 2013 results indicate that:

  • Spring oats production decreased by 87,000 tonnes (-58.4%). The area sown decreased by 12,800 hectares (-60.0%), while the yield per hectare increased by 4.0%.
  • Spring wheat production decreased by 70,000 tonnes (-56.5%). This was due to a decrease of 8,800 hectares (-57.6%) in the area sown.
  • Oilseed rape production fell by 15,000 tonnes (-30.5%). The area sown decreased by 4,200 hectares (-31.0%), while the yield per hectare showed a slight increase of just 0.8%.

Background Notes

Introduction

This release presents final estimates of the area, yield and production of the main arable crops in 2014 together with the comparable estimates for 2012 and 2013. The June 2012 – June 2014 estimates for the area under crops shown in Table 1 have been obtained from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) Single Payment Scheme.

The yield estimates are obtained from a joint survey conducted by Teagasc and the CSO.

Methodology

The yield figures are given on a “green” (as harvested) basis. The winter wheat yield refers to feed wheat. Similarly, the spring barley yield refers to feed barley. The oilseed rape yield is a weighted average of the winter and spring yield.

For potatoes, the early crop yield was applied to a proportion of the area under potatoes based on an estimate of the area sown under early potato varieties in each county. The main crop yield was applied to the remaining area.

The State yield figure is generally calculated by multiplying the area figure by the average yield figure at a county level and then aggregating to the State level. The State production figure is then calculated by multiplying the State area, as per the Single Payment areas from DAFM, by the State yield figure.

As a result of rounding there may be slight discrepancies between the sum (or difference) of the constituent items and the total shown. Percentage changes have been calculated on actual figures.
