Labour Market

The statistics presented in this chapter show developments in the Irish labour market and are based primarily on results from the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS).  The latter part of the chapter contains mainly administrative data, compiled by the CSO, showing the trends in the number of persons on the Live Register as well as details of industrial disputes.

The total number of persons in the labour force in 2014 was 2,156,100, an annual decrease of 14,500. The number of persons in employment decreased from 2,147,300 in 2008 to 1,901,600 in 2014.

The overall unemployment rate increased from 5.7% in 2008 to 13.9% in 2013 and stood at 11.8% in 2014. The number of persons unemployed in 2008 was 131,000 compared with 300,700 in 2013 and 254,500 in 2014. The number of persons unemployed decreased by 15.4% between 2013 and 2014.

During 2014 there were 44,015 days lost due to industrial disputes. This compares with 14,965 days lost in 2013 and 8,486 days lost in 2012. There were a total of eleven industrial disputes in 2014 compared with twelve in 2013. The eleven disputes in progress in 2014 involved 31,665 workers and eleven firms.

The average number of persons on the Live Register decreased from 418,950 in 2013 to 383,779 in 2014. The average number of males on the Live Register stood at 234,582 in 2014, with the average number of females at 149,197.
