Employee Skills Training and Job Vacancies 2006

 

The Employee Skills, Training and Job Vacancies Survey 2006 release presents the results of the work place module carried out in the National Employment Survey October 2006 survey. This module covered employee skills, enterprise training and job vacancies within the surveyed enterprises.

The survey covered all enterprises which had 3 or more employees in 2006 in the following sectors:

Manufacturing, mining and quarrying, Electricity, gas and water supply, Construction, Wholesale and retail trade, Hotels and restaurants, Transport, storage and communication, Financial intermediation, Business services, Public administration and defence, Education, Health and Other social services.

The results for 2006 show that:

  • Just under half (45.5%) of all enterprises provided internal and/or external training courses for their employees in 2006.
  • Course attendees spent an average of 3.2 days on training courses in 2006 with 2.1 days on internal courses and 1.1 days on external courses.
  • 44.4% of enterprises had annual performance reviews in 2006. This figure was 82.1% for large enterprises and 42.5% for small enterprises.
  • The number of job vacancies, as a percentage of the total number of employees, was 3.8% at the end of December 2006. Around 30% of all job vacancies were reported to be difficult to fill in December 2006.
  • 12.6 % of all enterprises reported there were acute shortages of English language skills amongst at least some of their employees in December 2006. Overall 46.6% of all enterprises reported having at least some acute shortage of particular skills.
  • 22.8% of all enterprises reported that their Manager, professional and associate professional employees required upgrading of IT skills. 19.5% of employers reported that employees in Clerical, sales and service occupations also required upgrading in this skills area. Employees in Production, transport, craft and other manual occupations required upgrading in technical and practical skills, according to 12.3% of all enterprises.
  • Employees stated that on-the-job training was the most preferred method of addressing employees' skills requirements (23% of employees). 48% of employees acquired their skills for their current job in 2006 by on-the-job training.
